Pilates

A unique system of mindful, body-sculpting movements, mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates encourage full-body wellness and awareness.

Pilates classes emphasise small movements and controlled breathing to work the core and pelvic floor.

From developing your core muscles (not to mention toning your arms and legs), to learning to focus your attention, the positive effects of Pilates are endless.

A new level of focus

Originally developed in the 1920s for the rehabilitation of injured soldiers, Pilates has become a mainstay of fitness. It aims to strengthen the core and improve full-body strength and balance. No wonder Pilates is recommended for those with back pain and other physical challenges. It’s also an effective way to prevent future issues if you’re already fit and injury-free.

Mat PIlates class

Mat Pilates classes

Mat Pilates classes take place in one of our bright and airy exercise studios. All you need is a mat – which we provide – and yourself. There’s occasional use of a resistance band, straps or ball, but that’s down to the instructor and they’ll always be provided. The instructor will guide you through exercises that incorporate upper and lower body strength, as well as core activation.

Reformer Pilates class

Reformer Pilates classes

Reformer Pilates gets its name from the unique piece of machinery designed especially for the class, the Reformer. This consists of a sliding platform, known as a carriage, with springs and ropes. During the reformer Pilates class it allows you to dial up or dial down the resistance by adding or removing springs so you can tailor the workout to you.

Pilates FAQs

Who is Pilates for?

Pilates can be enjoyed by everyone, whether you’re a complete beginner or have been practising for years. All the exercises can be adapted to different needs, so don’t be afraid to give it a go. Pregnant women can also enjoy the workout, although you should speak to your doctor or midwife first, just to be safe.

What should I wear?

Whatever you’re comfortable in. Some prefer leggings and a t-shirt, others come in shorts and a vest. There’s no right or wrong clothing, as long as it’s comfortable, stretchy and easy to move in. Pilates classes are done either barefoot or with grip socks.
